QuickFact #1 | Soviet tank destroyer against German “Big Cats”
Which Soviet vehicle received an unusual nickname after its first fights against the German Tiger and Panther tanks?
The Soviet self-propelled heavy howitzer SU-152 entered into service during the Battle of Kursk.
It was quickly nicknamed “Beast Slayer” (Zveroboy), because it proved effective against the German “big cats” – PzKpfw V Panther, PzKpfw VI Tiger and Ferdinand tank destroyers.
SU-152 was able to eliminate every German tank from combat. A shell fired from its powerful 152 mm gun-howitzer could literally rip Tiger’s turret off its hull.
